Frequently Asked Questions
Standard procedures, local waste disposal ordinances, and compliance rules in Jefferson County.
Q: Does the Foothills Landfill charge extra for untarped loads?
Foothills Landfill's 2026 rate sheet says all loads must be covered and that uncovered loads may be charged twice the load price. This is a facility rate condition, not a fixed $20 Jefferson County surcharge. Check the current sheet before making a trip.
Q: How do paint drop-offs work in Colorado?
PaintCare drop-off is free at participating sites, but accepted products and visit limits vary by location. Check the site before traveling. Rooney Road separately lists paint as free within its container and annual visit limits.
Q: What items are completely banned from local landfills?
Colorado state law bans all electronics (TVs, laptops, computers, monitors), vehicle lead-acid batteries, motor oil, whole passenger tires, and liquid chemical waste from landfills. Troops carefully sorts these out and takes them to specialized recycling centers on your behalf.
Q: Can commercial waste go to Rooney Road HHW?
No. The Rooney Road facility is subsidized by local tax funds and is reserved solely for residential household hazardous waste (HHW). Commercial organizations and businesses must contract with certified commercial hazardous waste processors.
