Latex Paint vs. Oil-Based Paint
The disposal method depends on the type of paint. Latex (water-based) paint becomes solid and inert when it dries and can be disposed of as regular solid waste once fully hardened. Oil-based paint (alkyd) is flammable and classified as household hazardous waste — it cannot go in the trash in any form.
Disposing of Latex Paint
- ▸Harden small quantities: Leave the can open to dry in a ventilated area. For faster results, stir in kitty litter, sawdust, or commercial paint hardener.
- ▸Once fully solid with no liquid paint remaining, the can can go in your regular trash — lid off so collectors can verify it's solid.
- ▸Do not harden large quantities indoors — fumes can be significant.
- ▸Colorado PaintCare also accepts latex paint for recycling (see below).
PaintCare Drop-Off Locations
PaintCare is a paint industry-funded program with participating drop-off sites across Colorado. The program currently charges no fee for paint drop-off; accepted products and visit limits may vary by site, so confirm the limit with the location. Containers up to 5 gallons are accepted.
A separate PaintCare fee is included in the purchase price of new paint: $0 for containers up to half a pint, $0.50 for larger than half a pint to under 1 gallon, $1.15 for 1–2 gallons, and $2.25 for over 2 gallons up to 5 gallons. These product fees took effect April 1, 2026; they are not drop-off charges.

PaintCare accepts latex, oil-based, and specialty paints — all properly sealed in their original containers.
HHW Drop-Off Programs
Fees, accepted paint, and quantity limits vary by program. Rooney Road currently lists qualifying paint products as free within its stated limits; check Denver and Boulder County's current program pages before making a trip.
What Not to Do
- ▸Never pour paint down a drain, toilet, or storm sewer — it contaminates water supplies and is illegal.
- ▸Never dump paint in the trash while still liquid.
- ▸Do not burn paint cans — toxic fumes are released.
- ▸Don't leave cans outside to evaporate — runoff contaminates soil.
